Peter Ader Memorial Trophy retained by Stuart Shalom - this year in partnership with John Athey. This one session duplicate on Wednesday 23 December 2009 was won by Stuart Shalom and John Athey. Stuart won this event last year with Alec Smalley. It is appropriate that Stuart is one of the few people remaining who remember Peter Ader as the owner of Central Bridge Club in the late 1960's and early 1970's. |

SANTA CLAUS PAIRS 2009 Bad weather on the day reduced the turn out by three or four tables. Nevertheless there were 17 tables of intrepid bridge players who braved the elements to play. They were met at the door with a glass of hot mulled wine and play commenced a little later than intended with Tony Woollin, the Tournament Director arriving after the scheduled starting time having struggled to get from Blackburn in appalling conditions.
The first session was initially won by Maggie McPhillips & Dorothy Lewis before a rescore just pushed them into second place behind Paul Hackett & Mike Bell. Nevertheless it was a tremendous result for Maggie & Dorothy to do so well in such a distinguished field. Because Paul Hackett and Mike Bell went on to win the event the first session prize went to Maggie McPhillips & Dorothy Lewis. The second session prize went to Alec Smalley & Barbara Lewis as all the pairs above them were major prizewinners.
Manchester Bridge Club's sponsors Atherton Thind donated two bottles of Champagne to be won as a result of a prize draw. The winners were Ian Kane and Jean Hand. Atherton Thind are Chartered Financial Planners and full information about them can be found on a link on our website. The club is very pleased to be associated with Atherton Thind who have provided sponsorship to re-cover all the chairs in the main downstairs playing room.

World Champion Bridge Players Honoured By Manchester County Bridge Association Manchester County Bridge Association recently held a reception at Manchester Bridge Club to celebrate the success of two members who have returned with Gold Medals from a grueling two weeks playing in the World Seniors Bridge Championship in Sao Paulo Brazil.
Kevin Comrie,Chairman of the Association, paid tribute to Paul Hackett and John Holland who have done much for the international reputation of Manchester.
Paul Hackett has been the Country's leading professional bridge player for nearly forty years. In the past he has brought many famous bridge players to Manchester including Omar Sharif in 1973 and again in 1981.He and Jeff Morris were instrumental in founding the Commonwealth Nations Bridge Championship which was inaugurated in Manchester in 2002 and the Warren Buffett Cup which is an America vs. Europe contest held at the same time as Golf's Ryder Cup. His twin sons, Justin and Jason, are themselves former Junior World Champions having won their medals in 1996.
John Holland has established a reputation as one of England's best bridge players. In the recent European Championships in Pau, he and his partner were rated as one of the two top pairs in the whole event. Kevin described John as the John Wayne of bridge -not one for making speeches but getting results by his actions at the bridge table. He and his life partner Michelle Brunner live in Stockport. Remarkably Michelle is a former World Bridge Champion having won her first Women's World Championship in 1985 in where else?........Sao Paulo!! |
