| This year's Ruia Cup was the best attended and the strongest competition ever. |
| Going into the final session Martin Taylor's team of Justin Hackett, Ross Harper and Paul Hackett had a comfortable lead over Catherine Draper's team. They made no mistake in the final matches with Mike Alexander, Barbara Hackett and Michael Byrne joining Justin for the final session to finish comfortably on a total of 144 with Catherine Draper, Dave Debbage, Andrew Woodcock and John Hassett on 129.It was a close run thing for third with Pauline and John Rudolf playing with Jean and Peter Hand securing third spot with 106 -just one ahead of Dave Audley, Jeff Smith and the Nelsons on 105 and Eve Lighthill, Ian Kane and the Rosenbaums on 103 team . |
| And the answer to the question in the heading. The answer is FOUR - Paul Hackett and Ross Harper are current Seniors World Champions, Barbara Hackett is a former Women's World Champion and Justin Hackett is a former Junior World Champion! |

Sensational Win for Barbara Lewis in Merville Goldstone Trophy
Manchester's County Knockout teams competition played to choose a representative County team for the English Counties Teams of Four Championship (Pachabo Cup) is a fearsome event. Manchester is one of the strongest counties in the country and all the top players enter. So it is a remarkable achievement for Barbara Lewis's team (Sam Herman, Alec Smalley, Tom Slater) to win for the first time this year.
In the final they played Michael Byrne, Michael Newman, Gary Hyett and Rodney Lighton. After 24 of the 32 boards Barbara's team led by 1 IMP. Michael Byrne won the last eight boards by 1 IMP to make the scores dead level. Four more boards had to be played to break the tie, three of them were flat, but on the fourth Tom Slater and Alec Smalley bid and made an excellent slam to win by 11 IMPs! Well done! |
