John Parsons Jnr wins Geoff Nuttall Trophy in tense finish
Monday night competition, the Geoff Nuttall Trophy, finished on Monday 28th April with an amazing finale. The event scored from the best percentage scores over nine sessions from January to the end of April came down to the very last board of the evening when Dave Matthews and Barry Hobden needed to score a top to win.They didn't so John Parsons Jnr kept his lead and becomes the winner of the Geoff Nuttall Trophy and £50 prize. |
Club Champion
The Manchester Bridge Club Championship was won by Eve Lighthill who held off a strong challenge from Mike Bell and Rhona Goldenfield. It is the first time that Eve has been Club Champion. Many congratulations to her ! |
Two Semi-Finals and a Final!
It is at this time of year that the major national events are reaching their final stages. In the Hubert Phillips the National Mixed Teams Championships, Rhona and Bernard Goldenfield playing with Bill Hirst and John Hassett lost their semi-final match to Frances Hinden's Surrey team. In the other semi-final, this time for Crockfords, Michelle Brunner's team of John Holland, Bill Hirst, John Hassett, Michael Byrne and Duncan Happer lost to the very strong Peter Crouch team (Glyn Liggins, Gunnar Hallberg, Martin Jones, Andrew McIntosh and Ben Green.
However John Hassett and Bill Hirst with teammates John Holland and Clive Owen have qualified for the Gerard Faulkner Salver final where they will be playing Denis O'Donovan's team (Patrick Collins, Peter Law, John Short, David Kendrick, John Cullingworth). |
International Honours
The team representing England in the European Open Teams Championships in Pau, France is composed predominantly of Club members with John Holland, Paul Hackett, Jason Hackett, Justin Hackett, John Armstrong and Tony Waterlow comprising the selected team. |
Portland Pairs
Congratulations to Michelle Brunner and John Holland on winning the Portland Pairs for the third time having won previously in 1981 and 2003. The runners up were Tracy Capal and Bill Niccol. 371 pairs competed. |
Really Easy Congress & National Newcomers Pairs
Congratulations to Sue Bailey who partnered John Pain in the Really Easy Congress in Derby and won the main Swiss Pairs event. Well done to Haidee Schofield and Fiona Goode on coming 5th in the National Newcomers Pairs on Sunday 16th March. |
National Pairs
Congratulations to Michael Byrne and Mike Bell on winning the Northern Regional Final in Bradford. This is the fourth year running that a Manchester Pair has won this event. In the final they were also the best placed of the Manchester qualifiers at 9th. Jeff Smith and Andrew Petrie were 22nd. Dave Audley and Mark Bass were 31st. |
League
In the Manchester League St Titus clinched the top division by winning their final match 24-6. Congratulations to Michael Byrne, Michael Newman, Gary Hyett, Rodney Lighton and Mike Bell. This is the first League win for all three Michaels. |
EASTER CONGRESS SUCCESS
In the main pairs event at Blackpool in second place were Kath and Alan Nelson and in third place were Joy and Irving Blakey. Both these pairs played together in the teams and won on a split tie from Catherine Draper's team. |
REGIONAL FINAL OF NATIONAL PAIRS
Congratulations to Mike Bell and Michael Byrne who won the Northern Regional Final of the National Pairs in Bradford on Sunday 16th March. Jeff Smith also qualified in third place for the national final and Mark Bass and Dave Audley in 8th place.
This is the fourth consecutive year that a Manchester pair has won the Northern Pairs, previous winners were Jeff Smith/David Adelman (2005), Michael Byrne/John Hassett (2006), John Holland/Michelle Brunner (2007). |
ENGLAND TRIALS
After four gruelling weekends of trials to select the English team for the Europeans this summer the winners were John Holland playing with John Armstrong, Paul Hackett and Tony Waterlow.They will represent England in the European Championships in Pau, France in June.Well done to the whole team but especially to John Holland, John Armstrong and Paul Hackett who play regularly in the club. |

| This match to mark the respective anniversaries of Manchester Bridge Club (30th) and Young Chelsea (40th) was played on-line on Sunday. Representing Manchester were Dave Debbage, Edward Levy, John Hassett and Alan Mould. Representing Young Chelsea were Internationals David Gold, Rob Cliffe, Heather Dhondy and club director Gordon Rainsford. Manchester won by 6imps over 18 boards after being 4imps brhind at half time. Alan Mould played from the main room at the club and gave a most fascinating and instructive running commentary on his own bidding and play in front of an audience of 30 plus players. Many thanks to Alan for his time and to David Collier for all his technical assistance. Prior to the on-line match there was a short duplicate playing the same hands as the match.The results were: |

Junior International - the Channel Trophy
Jennie Marvin and Adam Hickman have just returned from Holland after being on the winning teams in the Channel Trophy competitions for Girls and Under-20s respectively. Michael Byrne was the non-playing captain who inspired his Under-20 team to a fairy tale victory. Michael Bell and Alex Morris played in the Under-25 event.
