CHEADLE ROYAL CUP
Can Gillian and John make it three years in a row winning our Monday Night Competition held between the beginning of October and Christmas? Twelve Mondays starting Monday 6th October count towards this event which is scored on the best seven combined percentage scores of a partnership.Last session is the 22nd December. |
WORLD MIND SPORTS OLYMPIAD -BEIJING
The club wishes all five English teams playing in this event over the next two weeks every success.Players involved from the club include Jason and Justin Hackett playing in the Open Team,Catherine Draper and Barbara Hackett (Germany!) playing in the Ladies,Andrew Woodcock and Ollie Burgess in the Under -28s and Adam Hickman in the Under-20s with Michael Byrne the Under 20 non-playing captain. |
WARREN BUFFETT CUP
The club is very proud of its contribution in getting this event started through the good offices of Denis Robson when Chairman of the EBU and Paul Hackett through his player contacts.Many congratulations to Paul on his Captaincy Of the European Bridge team in September when the Europeans beat America at Louisville to win the Buffett Cup for the first time. |
NEWCOMERS LEAGUE

JUDY STELFOX
We were very sad to learn of the untimely death of Judy. Judy played regularly on duplicate nights and in the Manchester league.She found earlier this year that she had an untreatable illness yet continued to play and enjoy her bridge until about a month ago.Her good humour and fun loving disposition will be greatly missed. |
30TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY AND COMPETITIONS
The 30th Anniversary Teams held over the weekend of 23rd to 24th August was won in convincing manner by Roy Moore's team of Roy Moore, Paul Hackett, Barbara Hackett and Justin Hackett. It was a very distinguished field with many well known local players participating in addition to two teams from Wales, the Under 28 England Team (who came second) and the Under 20 England Team. GERARD FAULKNER SALVER
Congratulations to John Hassett's team (Bill Hirst, John Holland and Clive Owen) who won the Seniors' Knock Out Teams on 8th June beating Dennis O'Donovan's team (Patrick Collins, Peter Law, John Short, David Kendrick and John Cullingworth) in the final by 54 IMPs. 67 teams entered this event which was knockout throughout. Entrants had to be born before 1951 to be eligible for this event which was previously used to choose the team to represent England in the European Seniors. This is the third time that John Hassett and Bill Hirst have reached the final but it is their first win. |
Club Champion
The Manchester Bridge Club Championship was won by Eve Lighthill who held off a strong challenge from Mike Bell and Rhona Goldenfield. It is the first time that Eve has been Club Champion. Many congratulations to her ! |
Two Semi-Finals and a Final!
It is at this time of year that the major national events are reaching their final stages. In the Hubert Phillips the National Mixed Teams Championships, Rhona and Bernard Goldenfield playing with Bill Hirst and John Hassett lost their semi-final match to Frances Hinden's Surrey team. In the other semi-final, this time for Crockfords, Michelle Brunner's team of John Holland, Bill Hirst, John Hassett, Michael Byrne and Duncan Happer lost to the very strong Peter Crouch team (Glyn Liggins, Gunnar Hallberg, Martin Jones, Andrew McIntosh and Ben Green.
However John Hassett and Bill Hirst with teammates John Holland and Clive Owen have qualified for the Gerard Faulkner Salver final where they will be playing Denis O'Donovan's team (Patrick Collins, Peter Law, John Short, David Kendrick, John Cullingworth). |
