Foster's team win Eve Lightill Trophy

In a comfortable victory, Pete Foster, Peter Jones, Boris Ewart, Phil Callow, and John Rudolph won all of their six matches to win the Eve Lighthill trophy by 12 victory points. In second place were Michael Byrne, Craig Fisher, Michael Newman, Rhona and Bernard Goldenfield on 79 and 3rd were Jeff Smith, Anthony Lipson, Joy and Irving Blakey, Maurice and Anne Super on 69.

The Foster team led throughout scoring 14, 18, 13 then 17. In match 5 they were 5 victory points ahead of 2nd place Byrne who they then beat 16-4 on a few crucial slam deals to give themselves a 13 point cushion going into the final match over Kath Nelson's team (Alan Nelson, Martin Braid, Mike Clarke, David Adelman) who they had beaten in match 4. In the last match Nelson lost 19-1 to Byrne, so all Foster had to do was avoid losing by 33 imps to capture the title. They scored their sixth successive victory against Lighthill to give themselves 91 out of a possible 120 victory points, a very convincing win.

Manchester members dominate local competition
Manchester Bridge Club members took pride of place in the Great Northern Swiss Pairs held at Risley near Warrington over the weekend. The national event attended by over 150 pairs was won in comfort by John Holland playing with Clive Owen from the North East. In 2nd place were Bernard Goldenfield and Bill Hirst, and in 5th were Michael Byrne and Michael Newman.

Also in the top ten were Rhona Goldenfield and Michelle Brunner, who were playing together as practice for the Venice Cup, the ladies World Championships, which are going to be held in Estoril in Portugal next month.

They qualified to represent England having come 7th in the Europeans, and will be hoping to build on the Bronze medal they won in the World Teams Olympiad in Istanbul last October.

The 6th Annual Manchester Congress held at New Century Hall was a great success, enjoyed by all. Pairs winners were Bill Hirst and Michael Byrne playing together for the first time! They held off a determined challenge from last years winners John Holland and Patrick Jourdain, who gained some consolation with the Men's pairs trophy. 3rd was Jeff Smith / David Adelman, 4th were Sue / Nick Woodcock (mixed pairs winners ) 8th were Rhona Goldenfield / Michelle Brunner (ladies pairs winners ) and 12th were Mark Reeve / David Collier, (Intermediate Trophy winners)

The teams was a star studded affair, with the winners being Justin and Jason Hackett, Janet De Botton and Nick Sandquist, just ahead of Tracy Capal, David Adelman, Jeff Morris and Richard Silcock, 3 rd were last year's winners Michelle Brunner, Pablo Casselle, John Hassett, Bill Hirst.

The C final was won by  rising superstar Elizabeth Roberts (16), playing with Dave Pennington and Mum and Dad Jean and Adrian Roberts. Elizabeth has since put in a noteworthy performance in the National Womens Teams finishing 3 rd in the B final playing with three other under 25 players- Sarah Whitehead, Susan Stockdale and Bryony Youngs, and celebrating her 17th birthday during the event!.

In the Leeds National Swiss teams, the team of David Adelman/ Jeff Smith, John Hassett / Jeff Morris did well, reaching table one, but they lost to the eventual winners and ended joint 5th .

The Gazette Trophy, the county qualifier for the Garden Cities, was held on 6th February with 8 teams entering, from 6 different clubs- Cheadle, Bramhall, Marple, Prestbury, Altrincham and Manchester .

At half time it was looking grim for Manchester A, who had won it for the previous two years, as 2001 winners Manchester B were on an enormous 75 out of 80 vp's! But Manchester A finally produced the goods in the second half to win by a deceptively comfortable 19 VP's.

Well done to Michael Byrne, Michael Newman, Craig Fisher, Mike Goldsmith, Jeff Smith, David Adelman, and Bernard and Rhona Goldenfield, who will go on to represent the county in the Garden Cities regional final in May.

In Australia 's Gold Coast Congress, John Holland and Michelle Brunner achieved an amazing double winning both the main pairs and teams events. This congress is the Australian equivalent to Brighton -but harder! The foreign contingent included some of the Polish Bermuda Bowl team, so it is even more notable an achievement. Also, Kath and Alan Nelson came 3 rd in the B final. They enjoyed it even more because while out their they celebrated their 40 th Wedding Anniversary, so Special congratulations to them.

MBC has its very own triple champion!
Congratulations to David Adelman on his recent successes at the Christmas and Easter Festivals of bridge at Blackpool and the National Pairs Regional Final held at Bradford in March. David is Current Teams Champion for both Xmas and Easter Festivals at Blackpool Congresses and Current Northern Pairs Champion.
